I thought it was about time I did the full Cambridge Orbital again. The rest of this post will be me working out a single correct average moving speed. Unlike last time, battery life was never going to be an issue, and wasn’t – I have the Hero extended battery now – it was somewhere above 70% when I got back.
Google My Tracks decided to periodically stop recording data. I first noticed this when I stopped at Great Shelford. It did it again at Little Eversden, and I only noticed when I stopped at Kingston. As a result the data is incomplete and in three parts.
I’m pretty pleased with my average moving speed on the first part, which is pretty much the same route as Semi Orbital except it doesn’t go right along the river, instead following the road through Horningsea – average moving speed on this stage was 27.67km/h which is the best I’ve done yet on any route.
The route I took was identical to that of Cambridge Orbital 1. My estimates of total time and total moving time follow, from which I will calculate my overeal average moving speed.
I left at 16:20:37 (part one) and returned at 20:09:05 (19:21:38 + 00:47:27) (part three). So total time was 3:48:28. I stopped at five places: Cottenham, Cambridge Airport, Great Shelford, Haslingfield and Kingston, for between 5 and 10 minutes at each. Part two has stationary time of 14:56, part two has 5:54 and part three, 6:39. So stationary time was at least 27.29. This would suggest a time per stop of 5:30, which sounds about right. So, the overall moving time was at most 3:20:59. Using the distance of 75.59km known from my first go on this route, I calculate my average moving speed to be at least (since stationary time is a lower bound) 22.54km/h – I slowed down fairly significantly on the last quarter or so – partly due to the distance already travelled and partly because that bit is particularly hilly. Compared with my average moving speed of 20.74km/h the fist time I did this, I’m reasonably happy.
